CATALYST

I will show a short video clip. Answer these questions in socrative:

  1. What are the symptoms of heat stroke?
  2. Heat stroke begins when our bodies get to what temperature (Fahrenheit)?
  3. What is dangerous about heat stroke?

Adaptations Assignment:

For each situation, identify:
1. the variation – what is different about the population
2. the environmental pressure – amount of food, predators, certain changes in habitat, etc.
3. determine which type of organism is selected FOR (survive) or AGAINST (not survive as well).
4. describe what the population might look like over time.

1. There are 2 types of worms:   worms that eat at night (nocturnal) and worms that eat during the day (diurnal).  The birds eat during the day and seem to be eating ONLY the diurnal worms.  The nocturnal worms are in their burrows during this time. Each spring when the worms reproduce, both kinds have 500 babies.  However, 90% of the babies of diurnal worms die.

b. what is the environmental pressure? _______________________________
c. Which type is selected FOR? ____________ AGAINST? ____________
d. What might the population look like over time?

2. There are 3 types of polar bears: ones with thick coats, ones with thin  coats and ones with medium coats.  It is fall, soon to be winter.  The temperatures are dropping rapidly and the bears must be kept warm, or they will freeze to death.

3. In ostriches, there are 2 types: ones that run fast and those that           run slowly.  The fast birds can reach up to 40 miles an hour.  Jackals love to eat ostrich, and they can reach speeds of up to  35-40 miles per hour.

4. There are two types of rabbits: those that only eat grass and those that only eat berries and flowers.  A drought (loss of rain) happens one year,  and the plants have difficulty producing any extras (flowers, berries, etc.). They can only try and keep themselves green so there is only grass around.

5.  There are three types of star fish: red, yellow, and green.  Due to changes in the temperature of water, most of the coral in the sea becomes green.  The number of sea urchins who eat starfish stay the same and are not affected by the coral color.

d. What might the population look like over time?

6.  In the desert, there are two kinds of lizards: lizards who have hard, bumpy tails and those that have smooth, soft tails.  The population of the desert hawk increases in the spring.  The desert hawk can more easily pick up lizards that have hard, bumpy tails.  The smooth tails are too slippery.
